Against Interpretation
In Against Interpretation, writer, Susan Sontag expresses her mind on "interpretation". Sontag believes that interpretation of art damages societies sensibilities. Sontag does so by using negative phrases and words like the following: befoul, poison, revenge, impoverished, and depleted, just to name a few. She says it is "the revenge of the intellect upon the world". But I draw my main emphasis from the last paragraph, where Sontag really tears into interpretation. Reading closing reminded my of an earlier blog post, where the writer (Billy Collins) expounds on how students "strangle" and "torment" poems to simply find the meaning. Sontag actually says that literature is actually the most targeted "victim" than any other art. In my opinion, I can agree with Sontag and Collins as a student and someone who plans on working in the literary field.
