In the article, Anna Bernasek, a writer for newsweek.com, compares the challenge of paying for college in the 1960s and in present time. The writer argues that today’s college tuition has doubled in price from the prices from the 1960s. She speaks about how much rising tuition habecome a problem by being blunt and straight to the point. The writer initiates the thesis by including family income values, tuition rates, and other factual information. Using these strategies allows her to further her point about the issue.

Her studies show that with this act in place the price of higher education will rise. Shaffer’s ways of “convincing” work due to the use of facts and proof and provides an area where she displays the source she cited.

The writer faults the 2008 recession that caused states to begin cutting funding that was directed to higher education. Douglas-Gabriel develops her thesis by giving information on student debt, how much funding from certain states was cut, and tuition rates. The writer incorporates quotes and conversations made by real students and this helped her make the point as well.
