AP Question 2
In the novel, Middlemarch,
the author George Eliot uses the literary devices narrative perspective and
selection of detail. Both devices plays an important role in this excerpt,
being that this piece is written in narrative perspective and selection of
detail portrays the relationship of the newlyweds, Rosamond and Lydgate.
To begin with, Eliot starts showing the couple’s money
problems. Not only does the “money problems” bring a negative connotation words
like: unkind, disobedience, weeping, and disliked. The words bring a feeling of
disdain in the relationship and displays their surrounding as unhappy. He uses
this to show the struggles of the typical newlyweds.
Moving along, the piece is written in third person
omniscient point of view. By it being in this point of view, the reader is able
to have a clear explanation of the characters’ mindset, feelings, and thoughts.
Being in third person omniscient point of view, the narrator has no need to
form an opinion or having a one-side view.
In conclusion, George Eliot depicts the struggles between
couples during the beginning of the marriage. The employment of the negative
connotive words and the use of third person omniscient point of view convey the
problems everyone has.
